Matte Eye Shadow Palettes (Thoughts, Swatches & Photos)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, matte eye shadows are my favorite! So naturally I’m drawn to all matte palettes and have picked up a few over time. I also have quite a few individual matte eye shadows in my MAC palette, but I plan on doing a separate post for that in the next few weeks so today I’ll just be sharing my all matte palettes. I’ll be giving my thoughts, photos and swatches of all the palettes/shadows. Enough yapping Katie, let’s get started!

Matte Eye Shadow Palette

Meet Matt(e) Nude

Meet Matte Nude Palette

Meet Matte Nude Swatches

Price: $42
Can be found at theBalm.com or occasionally on HauteLook.com

Quick thoughts:

Pros: AMAZING packaging with a large mirror. Nice range of shades. The shadows are pigmented, have a creamy consistency and blend well.

Cons: The lights shades can be a bit powdery but nothing a little tapping can’t solve!

Naked Basics

Naked Basics Palette

Naked Basics Palette Swatches

Price: $27
Can be found at Ulta, Ulta.com, Sephora, Sephora.com or UrbanDecay.com

Quick thoughts:

Pros: Compact packaging with a decent size mirror. Six perfect shades to create a look or to add additional matte shadows to either of the larger Naked palettes. As usual for Urban Decay these shadows have nice pigmentation, are extremely creamy and blend out with little effort.

Cons: I’m not a fan of the packaging. I say this because it can be veryyyy difficult to open. If your nails are painted, good luck not chipping them trying to open it!

***However, I was able to solve this problem with the help of my stepdad. We used the blade of a box cutter to shave down the little nub at the opening a bit and it now opens with ease! I’d highly recommend doing this if you had the same problem with your palette but be careful not to shave the nub down too, too much because then your palette won’t stay closed at all anymore.***

Eye On Neutral

Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Palette

Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Palette Swatches

Price: $19.99
Can be purchased at Target, Target.com or SoniaKashuk.com

Quick Thoughts:

Pros: Nice, wide range of shades. The shadows are very pigmented, creamy and blendable. The side of the palette slides out and has a flip book with three different looks you can create using these shadows.

Cons: Although I like the clear top there is no mirror included on the packaging which can be a problem for some. The lightest shade is a bit chalky but again, nothing a little tapping can’t solve.

Round Up

Meet Matt(e) Nude wins for packaging, Naked Basics wins for size but overall if I were to recommend one of these palettes it would be Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral. I may be a little biased because I love, love, love this palette. It’s been a favorite, go-to palette of mine since I purchased it last summer. Taking price, quality and the amount of shadows into consideration I think it’s the best option. You can’t beat having twelve highly pigmented, blendable shadows at a $19.99 pricetag!

Sorry this post is a few days late, it was a bit overcast on Friday so I wasn’t able to get good shots of the palettes until Sunday afternoon.

Have you tried any of these palettes? What were your thoughts? Or do you have other matte eye shadow palettes you think I should try out? Leave a comment!

The Balm Meet Matt(e) Nude Palette (Photos and Swatches)

Outside Packaging

Inside Packaging

Meet Matte Nude Packaging - Open

I absolutely loveeee The Balm’s packaging. I think they have one of the best, if not the best packaging out of all the beauty brands out there. I especially love the cover of the Meet Matt(e) Nude palette. Last year The Balm released their original Meet Matt(e) palette which featured Matt fully clothed on the cover and since this is the neutral or “nude” version they decided to have Matt in his “birthday suit” on the cover. I just think it’s a brilliant idea, kudos to whoever at The Balm that thought of it!

Eye Shadow Close-Up

Another thing I love about the Meet Matt(e) palettes is the naming of the individual shadows. Each of the shadows in both palettes are coincidently named after a different Matt, which I find completely adorable!

Meet Matte Nude Swatches

I can’t say too much about the quality of these shadows because so far all I’ve done is these small swatches. I plan on doing a MOTD post using this palette later in the week so I can update you with my true first impression then. However, I did notice the lighter shades (Matt Malloy and Matt Lombardi) were a bit chalky which is disappointing.

Overall, my impressions of the Meet Matt(e) Nude palette are pretty positive up to this point. I look forward to using the shadows in a complete look on Wednesday so be on the look out for that post!

Has anyone tried this palette yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Leave them in a comment below.

Meet Matt(e) Nude retails for $42 and can be found at TheBalm.com or occasionally on HauteLook for around 50% off (I purchased mine from Hautelook at the beginning of February).

Limited Edition Baby Lips Review + Swatches

I don’t know about you but when I hear or see the words “limited edition” I go crazyyyyy! So when I heard that Maybelline had released some limited edition Baby Lips I knew I had to hunt them down and snatch them up! I searched at a few different stores but the only place I found them was at Walgreens.

There are 3 new limited edition shades that come in two out of three limited edition twin packs. The twin packs retail for $7.99 each at Walgreens.

Since one of the twin packs has two permanent shades which I already own I decided to only pick up the two other packs that had the limited edition shades plus an additional permanent shade I didn’t have yet.

 Pack #1

Pink Wink: Light pink that slightly nudes out the lips while adding a baby pink tint. I would compare this to the permanent Pink Punch shade only lighter and a bit less pigmented. You may laugh at this but I’d pin the scent of Pink Wink to the smell of Hubba Bubba Bubble Tape Gum. Yes, that exact scent. (Who else remembers that stuff?!)

 Pack #2

Twinkle: This is my least favorite of the limited edition shades. It’s a very light pinky-peach in the tube but goes on completely clear. I also don’t care for the scent. I’m not exactly sure what the scent is but it’s definitely a miss…

Coral Crush: Orangey-coral when applied. Smells like it’s trying to be fruity or tangerine scented but this scent was a miss for me too. I really like this shade and hope they’ll make it permanent but something needs to change with the scent.

Like the smell of one, like the color pay off of two but other than those flaws they’re the same ol’ same ol’ Baby Lips. Since I love the formulation of Baby Lips so much I’ll give the limited edition shades…. 3 stars!

If you wanted to pick up any of the twin packs I’d recommend getting either the pack with Quenched and Pink Punch (both permanent shade and my favorites!) or the pack with the limited edition shades Coral Crush and Twinkled if you’re a fan of coral like I am.

Happy shopping!

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain Swatches (9 out of 12 Shades)

A couple months ago Revlon released their much anticipated Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains and as soon as I tried them I fell in love! I am obsessed with this product and have been since the minute I tried them. I guess you can say it was love at first swatch. They are easily one of my all time favorite lip products! (for more information read my full first impression/review here) Over the past couple months I’ve purchased 9 out of the 12 shades available so I wanted to do a quick post with some swatches for you. If you haven’t tried them yet you don’t know what you’re missing! I’d suggest giving at least one shade a try and hopefully these swatches will help you decided which.

I also wanted to include all 9 shades next to each other so you can compare them a little easier.

I hope this post gives you a better idea of what the shades actually look like. Keep in mind that once applied the shade will mix with your natural lip color and give you your own unique version of that color. For instance, Romantic is a red but once applied to my lips it mixes with my lip color and gives off a gorgeous bright coral. Just something to keep in mind but all-in-all you can’t lose with this product! If I pick up any of the remaining 3 shades I’ll update this post with another swatch.

Happy Monday everyone!

What’s in My Travel Makeup Bag?

As you may or may not know… I’m going on a little trip this weekend. It was originally supposed to be my mom, her friend, my friend and I going to the Mall of America. However, due to uncontrollable circumstances neither of our friends were able to make the trip so we were back to the drawing board. In order to avoid driving all the way to Minnesota my mom and I decided to go somewhere a little closer. After going over all the possibilities we could think of we decided on Michigan City, Indiana. Michigan City is only about an hour and a half drive as opposed to the 8 hour drive to the Mall of America. I’ll probably be putting up a vacation post with pictures and what not sometime next week but until then I wanted to share with you the makeup/beauty products (not including brushes) I plan on taking with me.

These are the two makeup bags I plan on taking with me. I received the larger Sonia Kashuk bag as a birthday gift last year from my best friend and the smaller bag is from Target’s Spring beauty bag giveaway.

Now onto the fun stuff!

Urban Decay Brow Box in Honey Pot, Maybelline Define-a-Brow eyebrow pencil in Light Brown and clear Maybelline Great Lash mascara to use as a brow gel.

Benefit Boi~ing concealer in 01, MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in Medium, MAC Fix + and NYC Smooth Skin bronzing face powder in 720A Sunny.

MAC powder blush in Sunbasque, Tarte Amazonian clay 12-hour blush in Tipsy and Tarte Amazonian clay bronzer in Park Ave Princess.

I wanted to have some options on my trip since we’ll be doing a variety of different activities so I decided to bring two different Sonia Kashuk 12 eye shadow palettes. On the left is Eye on Neutral and on the right is Eye on Color (I’m been lovinggg them both). I’m also taking an Urban Decay 24/7 glide-on eye pencil in Perversion, Urban Decay Primer Potion, Maybelline waterproof liquid eyeliner in Black, Covergirl Lash Blast Fusion in Very Black and my favorite E.L.F. eyelash curler.

I wanted to have some different options for lips as well so I chose two Revlon Just Bitten Kissable balm stains. The pink is Cherish and the orange/coral is Rendezvous. I’m also bringing a L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse lipstick in Sunset Angora and Baby Lips in Quenched which is clear.

Other beauty related items I’m taking are Victoria Secret Dream Angels perfume in Forever, PINK Fresh Vanillas body mist in Dream On, Clean & Clear dual action moisturizer, E.L.F. daily brush cleaner and Simple cleansing facial wipes. I’m also taking deodorant, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and some type of face wash or bar of soap to clean my face with but I figure that’s all a given…

Well that’s it! I hope you all enjoyed this post. Hopefully it gave you some ideas of things to take next time you go on a trip or just some things to pick up and try next time you’re out.

Keep a look out for a possible Michigan City trip post and/or a Michigan City shopping haul sometime next week. We’re hitting the road now so gotta go, byeeeee! Have a great weekend!

July 2012 Favorites!

June was my first ever favorites post and being done so spur the moment I was forced to try and remember all of the things I had been loving the previous month. This month however, I made sure to pay attention and write down all the things I had been gravitating towards and obsessing over. Well, here’s my July Favorites…

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer
MAC Fix +
MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural

I’ve been doing my makeup quite a bit this month and the main reason is because I found a face routine that takes less than 5 minutes. A full makeup routine in under 10 minutes (adding bronzer, blush, mascara and a lip product). I start by using the Maybelline concealer to cover any redness, blemishes and my under eye circles. Next, I spray my entire face with MAC fix + and follow that by applying MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Natural with a fluffy brush. This gives the perfect amount of coverage for summer. Although, for me it’s also enough coverage for everyday and I plan on doing this when schools starts back up since it’s so quick and easy.

Wet N Wild Blush in Pearlescent Pink

I’ve been reaching for Wet n Wild blush in Pearlescent Pink more times than not this month. It’s a great basic pink with a light shimmer to it. I’ve seen a few people compare Pearlescent Pink to Nars blush in Orgasm. While they do look similar in the pan they don’t apply as complete dupes on my skin. I find that Orgasm is more sheer when applied and Pearlescent Pink is more opaque.

Sonia Kashuk Eye on Color Palette

Whenever I wanted to spice up my makeup this month I added some eye shadow. I found myself grabbing for this Sonia Kashuk 12 eye shadow palette in Eye on Color and constantly using the 4 shades within the highlighted square. I liked and used these shades so much that I went on a hunt to find higher end dupes. I was between a few different brands but ended up purchasing Urban Decay shadows in X, Smog and Freelove. They’re not exact dupes but I like those three shades even better!

L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Lipstick

I purchased one shade of the L’Oreal Colour Riche Caresse Lipstick on a whim because the hot pink on the packaging caught my eye. Boy am I glad I did! This just took Revlon Lipbutter’s spot as my favorite drugstore lipstick. They’re actually very similar to the Lipbutters because they’re extremely moisturizing and apply sheer but have no problem building up color. The only difference is the Colour Riche Caresse Lipsticks go on much smoother than the Lipbutters and that’s saying a lot being that their name is Lipbutter. I have this lipstick in three shades: Blushing Sequin (hot pink), Cotton Pink (light, Barbie pink) and my favorite of the three, Sunset Angora (coral).

(I’ve also been wear Baby Lips in Pink Punch a bunch this past month)

Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

Let me first say I am not a face wash girl. I’m good with just a plain ol’ bar of soap to wash my face but I decided to give this Cetaphil cleanser a try after seeing a YouTube “beauty guru” talk about how it did wonders for her skin. Since seeing that video earlier this month I have been washing my face with this cleanser morning and night. I don’t think I’ve used it long enough to say whether or not it truly works for me since I did have a few small breakouts throughout the month but I’m definitely liking it so far.

Pink Fresh Vanillas Dream On Body Mist

This spray was a $4.50 impulse buy at the Victoria Secret Semi Annual sale back in June (I think?) and it actually paid off because I loveee this scent! I have been grabbing for it almost every single day this summer. During the summer I usually prefer to wear body sprays/mists daily because they’re less intense unless I’m going out then I’ll wear a summery scented perfume instead.

Sally Hansen Nail Color in Pacific Blue

Ladies and gentlemen, I have a new favorite polish! I still love my China Glaze Below Deck but Pacific Blue definitely takes the cake! I had been drooling over this color for weeks since seeing everyone posting pictures wearing it on Instagram but I could never find it anywhere. I had been checking every single store I went in for a weeks and thankfully I finally got my hands on it. Let me tell you, it was 100% worth the wait and all the searching! I’m actually painting it on my nails while typing out this post. I’m not even going to go into explaining Pacific Blue’s wonderfulness. Here’s the Google link to swatches of the color so you can see for yourself.

(I finally found it at one of my local Walgreens despite other Walgreens in the area not having it)

Garden Veggie Straws

My favorite snack of the month was hands down Veggie Straws. And yes, I know they don’t have any type of nutritional value… although I wish they did! I’ve been buying a GIGANTIC bag of these from Costco but I’ve seen the normal size bag at Trader Joes and a few other stores that carry groceries as well (in case you haven’t tried them and would like to).

Rascal Flatts Changed

My mom and I went to our 5th annual Rascal Flatts concert together this past Saturday so basically this entire month I’ve been listening to their newest CD ‘Changed’ to prepare for the concert. Whether you’re a country lover or not I’d highly suggest you check out this album, as well as any other Rascal Flatts music. I think they create songs and albums that can be related to and liked by music lovers of all genres.

Favorite TV Shows of the Month

I’ve been loving four specific tv shows this month: Pretty Little Liars, True Blood, Breaking Bad and of course I had to give Beverly Hills Nannies a little shout out. I’ve also been catching up on a ton of DVRed shows but I only wanted to include shows I’ve loved this month that are currently in season.

London 2012 Olympics

Oh! And I’ve also been watching the Olympics since they started. So far I’ve been keeping up with diving, swimming and my favorite, gymnastics. I plan on watching the track and field events as well. Go USA!

Well, that’s it for my July favorites! What about you? If you have any favorites you’d like to share leave a comment. I’d love to hear about your must haves for July.

Thanks for reading! Happy Hump Day!
